More than a thousand years before Geralt of Rivia became the most fearsome monster-hunting witcher around, witchers didn’t even exist. The Witcher: Blood Origin is set to explore “the story of how and why the very first prototype witcher was created,” explained star Laurence O’Fuarain in a first-look video that debuted at Tudum 2022: A Global Fan Event.

The limited series, which is a prequel exploring the origins of the world we see in The Witcher, will premiere Dec. 25 on Netflix. Blood Origin was created by Declan de Barra and Witcher boss Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, adapted from The Witcher book series by Andrzej Sapkowski.

While most details about the series are still under wraps, here’s what the stars revealed in their Tudum sneak peek: Michelle Yeoh headlines as elf Scian and was able to help shape her character by choosing Scian’s eye color. “I went for an aquamarine, a pale green, because I thought it would be unique and ethereal,” she said. “So otherworldly.”

Sophia Brown, who plays musician Éile, revealed that her character is an expert player of an instrument based on the nyckelharpa, “a Scandinavian instrument that features heavily in the soundtrack.” That soundtrack includes four original songs written by showrunner de Barra and composer Bear McCreary.

With five distinct celebrations, Tudum: A Netflix Global Fan Event includes first-look photos, never-before-seen footage, new trailers, behind-the-scenes access, celebrity appearances, interviews, and more from over 100 of your favorite series, films and specials.

Stay tuned for more about the world of The Witcher: Blood Origin, which Yeoh describes as “an epic adventure that takes us back to the golden age of elven history, before humans and monsters overran the continent,” as the series’ Dec. 25 premiere approaches.
