Where does one find an incredibly talented cast that is also, not to mince words, incredibly attractive?

Only in The Gray Man, the latest action thriller from the minds of Joe and Anthony Russo, the Marvel vets who brought the world Avengers: Endgame and Extraction, both starring Chris Hemsworth.

Based on the first book in the Gray Man series by Mark Greaney, the plot of the film unfolds as the CIA’s most skilled mercenary, Sierra Six (Ryan Gosling), aka the Gray Man, accidentally uncovers dark agency secrets and must flee a global manhunt led by his psychopathic former colleague Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans).

“The Gray Man is an incredibly mysterious character with a highly secretive past. In essence, he’s a ghost,” the Russo brothers told Tudum. “A minimalist, [whose] job is to hide in plain sight. Kill when he needs to kill, and disappear.”

The Russos not only directed The Gray Man, but they also produced the project with Chris Castaldi and Mike Larocca. Joe Russo penned the screenplay with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who last worked with the Russos on Endgame. Markus and McFeely also wrote all three of the Captain America films, which star Evans as the titular superhero.

The Gray Man release date

The Gray Man hits Netflix on July 22. Good luck catching up with him.

The Gray Man cast

Gosling plays the titular mysterious mercenary, and Evans is an international assassin hunting him. They are joined by Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Regé-Jean Page, Wagner Moura, Julia Butters, Dhanush, with Alfre Woodard and Billy Bob Thornton.

“Casting is critical in any project,” Anthony Russo told Netflix. “We wanted it grounded in psychological realism. As heightened as the characters are, you want actors that are going to bring some truthfulness to it. We couldn’t be more fortunate to work with the cast that we got on this one, and it’s important because it’s a dense world filled with a lot of unique characters. We needed a cast at this level to pull off the vision for the world we were creating.”

At Netflix’s Geeked Week, the Russos debuted an exclusive clip of Gosling and Evans’ first on-screen mano a mano. In typical Russo fashion, the intense action is punctuated with cutting sarcasm.

“Joe and I like to play with tone,” Anthony Russo said during the Geeked panel. “Part of that scene is really brutal and kind of shocking. And then all of a sudden, it twists and becomes very witty and sort of strange on a character level. The ability to be able to pivot between those kinds of ideas as filmmakers and as performers is difficult and something we like to play with because it’s just exciting to watch.”

During the panel, they also discussed the film’s globe-trotting locations.
