Here’s the Story Behind That Sex/Life Season 2 Locker Room Scene

Creator Stacy Rukeyser explains that jaw-dropping (and towel-dropping) moment.

No one knows how to do a locker room scene quite like Sex/Life. Jaws dropped in Season 1 when Cooper (Mike Vogel) gets an unexpected eyeful of Brad (Adam Demos) during a little gym reconnaissance mission in Episode 3 (minute 19:55, for all those wondering). After a very, um, direct peek at a nude Brad, Cooper suddenly understands why his wife Billie (Sarah Shahi) can’t shake her ex.

You didn’t think Sex/Life would overlook one of its greatest strengths in Season 2, did you? In the season finale, Cooper is back in a locker room — but in a very different mental state. He’s hit rock bottom in response to his breakup with Billie and finally made strides to better his life. Unfortunately, Cooper’s journey to self-improvement did include an unfortunate accident with best friend Devon (Jonathan Sadowski) that ended with a sex worker biting off Devon’s genitals.

“I thought after the accident, that everything down there,” Cooper says, uncomfortably looking towards Devon’s towel-covered crotch, “it might have been impacted.”

To ease Cooper’s concerns, Devon undoes his towel to reveal his new equipment, thereby giving Sex/Life another unforgettable full-frontal sequence. Devon explains that doctors were able to save his penis. Not only that, but also he gained an inch, a “stylish new curve” and a “whole new lease on life” in the process. Devon even mechanically raises his member using a built-in penis pump, to really give his gym buddies a show. While the moment is a true shocker, Sex/Life creator Stacy Rukeyser says it’s also a core part of the series’ narrative.

“Our ‘OMG’ moments always come from a place of story and character,” Rukeyser tells Tudum. “We really wanted to see what was going to happen with Devon.”

Over two seasons, Devon cements himself as “the devil on Cooper's shoulder,” according to Rukeyser. In Season 1, Devon entices Cooper to go to a sex party that nearly shatters his marriage with Billie. In Season 2, Devon plies Cooper with drugs, surprises him with sex workers and convinces him that driving expensive sports cars under the influence of multiple substances is a good idea. Throughout all of this, Devon cheats on his wife Trina (Amber Goldfarb) — and boasts about it.

“In the Sex/Life universe, we don’t let people do that without consequences,” Rukeyser says.

As questions swirled in the writers’ room about how to deal with Devon, writer Jamie Dennig pitched the mechanical member idea to his boss, assuming it would “never happen.” But Rukeyser had already researched a similar procedure earlier in her writing career for a Nip/Tuck spec script. “So I was completely here for that storyline. I felt like it was such a delicious comeuppance for Devon,” Rukeyser continues.

Cooper’s distaste for the conversation — and the use of terms like “inner penis” — didn’t hurt.

“Those scenes work really well because of Mike Vogel’'s reaction to them,” Rukeyser says. “What’s also so delicious, is that there is sweetheart Cooper, who would like to be anywhere but there. It’s fun to do a scene that’s rooted in character but done for comedy, too.”

Rukeyser hopes Devon’s entire penis pump saga urges viewers to be better partners. “Because if you don’t,” she jokes, “then you’re going to be in a terrible car accident and have your penis bitten off.” Well, probably not, but maybe the real lesson is: Look out for curves in the road — or anywhere else they might unexpectedly pop up.
