Did you miss him? Jamie Foxx has returned to stand-up comedy — and he’s got a story to tell.

In Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was… , the legendary entertainer took the stage in a comedy event directed by Hamish Hamilton. The special comes after Foxx’s 2023 hospitalization, and the Oscar- and Grammy-winning comedy icon sets the record straight, revealing he had a ‘brain bleed that led to a stroke,” which led to him fighting for his life. Foxx recounts his ordeal with vulnerability, expressing deep gratitude to those who supported his recovery — and a healthy dose of humor.

“April 11, I was having a bad headache, and I asked my boy for Aspirin,” he recalls in the special. “I realized quickly that when you’re in a medical emergency, your boys don’t know what the f**k to do.”

What Had Happened Was… is a celebration of resilience, humor, and the power of community.

“If I can stay funny, then I can stay alive,” Foxx says. “I’m back.”

Foxx will next appear with Cameron Diaz in Back in Action, a new action comedy arriving on Netflix early next year, in which the duo star as a pair of suburban spies. If you can’t wait until then, take a tour through Foxx’s decades-spanning career — from his turn as a vampire hunter in Day Shift to his performance (alongside his real-life daughter Corinne Foxx) in Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! — right here on Netflix.

The special is executive produced by Jamie Foxx, Marcus King, Datari Turner, James Longman, Raj Kapoor, Hamish Hamilton, and Katy Mullan. Watch Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was on Netflix now.
